Environmental injustice in banana production: Power, the environment and global health.

Pesticide exposures experienced by workers, small farmers and communities linked to banana production in Ecuador illustrate barriers to the achievement of health equity posed by inequitable social structures. This talk will explore the political economic and environmental dynamics generating pesticide toxicity, and how such environmental injustice is experienced by affected individuals. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in southwestern Ecuador, this case study yields lessons for the constructive use of critical scholarship to inform applied global health research and interventions.
