Dre. O’Loughlin est professeure à l’École de santé publique de l'Université de Montréal. Elle est membre senior du Carrefour de l’Innovation et de l’Évaluation en Santé au centre de recherche du Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CRCHUM), consultante à l’Institut National de Santé Publique du Québec (INSPQ) pour l’équipe de recherche sur la lutte contre le tabagisme et membre élue de l’American Academy of Pediatrics Tobacco Consortium. Avec son équipe du CRCHUM et d’autres chercheurs locaux, Dre O’Loughlin mène beaucoup de collaborations aussi bien au niveau national qu’international. Titulaire à la chaire de recherche du Canada en déterminants précoces de la maladie chronique à l’âge adulte depuis 10 ans (à ce jour), ses recherches se sont concentrées sur la compréhension de l’importance relative des déterminants génétiques, psychosociaux, comportementaux et environnementaux du risque infantile dans le développement de maladies chroniques à l’âge adulte.

Elle dirige deux études pédiatriques en cohorte (ex. les études NICO et AdoQuest) et est co-chercheure sur quatre autres.

De 2007 à 2013,  elle a été à la tête d’une équipe interdisciplinaire de renforcement des capacités (financée à hauteur de 1,5 million de dollars par le CIHR), incluant 35 chercheurs et étudiants travaillant sur la lutte contre le tabagisme.

Au cours des 5 dernières années, son travail compte 123 publications et plus de 151 présentations à des conférences locales, nationales et internationales. Il inclut aussi des rapports de Transfert de Connaissance dont 13 « Feuillets » portant sur son travail avec les praticiens de l’INSPQ, améliorant les pratiques utilisées lors de consultations pour arrêt du tabac, et cela pour six groupes de professionnels de la santé différents. Ces feuillets sont distribués aux praticiens de la lutte contre le tabagisme et aux responsables politiques partout au Québec ; ainsi, les résultats de ses recherches sont mis en pratique.

Le travail du Dre O’Loughlin profite d’une large couverture médiatique. Elle figure dans le classement des personnalités de l’année 2008 de l’Université de Montréal. L’un des meilleurs exemples de l’influence de son travail est probablement le fait qu’il ait été cité dans “Preventing Tobacco Use Among Youth and Young Adults: A Report of the Surgeon General, 2012” et “A Report of the Surgeon General: How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease: The Biology and Behavioral Basis for Smoking-Attributable Disease, 2010.” Ses recherches sont aussi citées dans un mémoire soumis récemment par l’INSPQ au gouvernement du Québec (Commission de la santé et des services sociaux), proposant des changements législatifs à la loi concernant la lutte contre le tabagisme.

Le travail du Dre. O’Loughlin est un exemple en matière de recherche interdisciplinaire ancrée dans la santé publique ; il fait preuve de leadership en termes de recherche infantile et adolescente et apporte les fondements des liens des « cellules à la société » permettant de favoriser la prévention précoce des maladies chroniques à l’âge adulte.
