Environmental injustice in Ecuador’s banana industry: A political ecology of global health approach

Pesticide exposures experienced by workers, small farmers and communities linked to banana production in Ecuador illustrate barriers to the achievement of health equity posed by colonial legacies and related inequitable structures. This talk will explore the political economic and environmental dynamics generating pesticide exposures, and how such environmental injustice is experienced by affected individuals. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in southwestern Ecuador, this analysis reveals implications for how global health research should be practiced and translated into policy and social change in the face of entrenched power relations.
