French language requirements
Admitted French-speaking students
- Students who have difficulty with French may need to take the TFLM, a free French-language proficiency test given at the Centre de communication écrite (CCÉ).
- The TFLM helps determine a person’s knowledge of written French rules (grammar, syntax and punctuation).
- Depending on test results, students may need to take mandatory classes recommended by the CCÉ.
- The program directors at ESPUM then conduct a follow-up.
Admitted non-French-speaking students
- All admitted students must take the TFI, an international French-language proficiency test. This test helps non-French-speaking students know their proficiency in French.
- The TFI assesses both oral and written French comprehension skills and oral and written French communication skills. It is offered all over the world by ETS (Educational Training Service) and costs around $100.
- Students do not need to pass the TFI to be admitted to most ESPUM programs. However, students need a score of at least 605/990 (an intermediate level) to start a program at ESPUM.
- Programs that require a passing grade on the TFI may also require an even higher score. This information can be obtained from the director of each program. When a passing grade on the TFI is an admissions requirement, the test is administered by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral studies (FESP) and the CCÉ.
- The results of the TFI are always sent to the director of the program to which the student has been admitted.
- Students then receive feedback on the results of their test. Sometimes recommendations are made as to how the student can improve his or her French (courses, workshops, tutoring, etc.).
Admitted non-French-speaking students who will write their courses in French
- In addition to the TFI, students must also pass a free UdeM CCÉ test.
- The CCÉ invites students to take the writing test.
- The test assesses written communication skills.
- Based on test results, some students will need to take classes to improve their French writing skills, as per the recommendation made by the CCÉ.
- The program’s Student Records Technician (TGDE) then conducts a follow-up.
